Small Sided Games 2008-9 Report

April 21, 2009

This past season has seen some progressive strides within DYSA in the area of player/coach development, this is great to see as there will be long term benefits for the District teams. Of note is the growing involvement of professional coaching staff within the clubs, Mark Rogers (TSA), Greg Berry (PAU) and Ajit Braich (NDU) are all working collaboratively to develop the players and coaches. Through effective communication and cooperation we can do our best to ensure that soccer in the Delta District will maintain a healthy environment for athletes of all ages for many years to come. Small Sided Games items of interest include:

  • Should U12 pull out of 5 District and stay within DYSA? This is done in other Districts as there are more teams since moving to 8 aside, fyi the 4 District does not report or track scores at U12?
  • Can U11 teams be tiered on a game to game basis? This is widely accepted as a positive player development concept and is supported by the DYSA Professional Coaches. The idea is that teams players could change on a week to week basis depending on the strength of the opposing teams, the professional coaching staff would oversee this to ensure that the best levels of competition are achieved for all players. One recommendation is to not track scores and to not have a league Champion award, there could be a season ending tournament which would include competitive and balanced teams. This is still in the concept phase and will be looked at in preparation for next season.
  • Possible U12 DYSA Development program is being looked at, Ciaran McMahon of the elect Program is steering this.
